Did you know that if the average person lives to be 70 that at 20 you have about 2,500 weekends left until you die? At 30 its 2,000 weekends; 50 - 1000 and at 60 you only have about 500 weekends left until you die? Wow.
What does one do with information like that? I mean, they say live for today. Live like you have no tomorrow. Carpe Diem!
Life is so fleeting. We waste so many seconds, minutes, hours and days on such silly stuff. We fail to prioritize our lives. I mean, right now I probably should be doing my college homework but instead I'm blogging.
I guess the blog can't be neglected and sometimes you have to get things off your mind before you can focus on what is important. So doing the blog will hopefully clear the thought of doing so out of my head so I can do what I really should be doing.
But I digress.
If life really is so fleeting why do we waste it? What really is important in life? I read a book recently that said that everything in life is relationships. Everything else is just a distraction. I believe that is true.
If you think about it relationships encompass quite a bit. I have my relationship with my wife whom I love. We have a special bond that takes time and effort to maintain. I wish I could say I do that well but I know I struggle. We don't fight often but we do have our ups and downs and irratations as well as joys.
And then there is my son. My bond with that kid is so great I couldn't ever imagine hurting him. And if anyone else ever hurt him I would have a hard time not paying them back ten fold. We have our ups and downs. He goes through phases (like now) where he throws tantrums and makes life tiresome. But I love him. He's my buddy. I'd never give him up.
Along with those two I have relationships with my mom, my dad, siblings, church friends, co-workers, bosses, old friends, new friends, acquantances and even those people I pass on the street. Yes, them too. It might not be a solid, or even a flimsy, relationship but how you treat those you do not know can go a long way in your own character and even in how others perceive you.
So with all those relationships how is it that we get consumed by the internet, video games, work, exercise and other activities? Yes, some of those we do with other people but I think you know what I'm getting at. We tend to do everything else but talk to people; relate to them.
I've heard many stories where a kind word was enough to make a person's day. Someone willing to step up for someone else made a friend. Another person specifically followed the leading of God and because they cared to simply be nice to someone they stopped the other from killing themself.
Two thousand weekends. That is what I have left if I live to 70. I don't want to spend them in front of the television vegitating. I probably will for some of them but I think my focus should be reaching out and caring for others. Reaching out and letting someone know that God cares too.
What do you think?
