Remembering

So here I am again. Woke up early this morning not of my own accord. I had at least 2, maybe 3 nightmares last night. When I woke up the last time my mind was moving a mile a minute and I couldn't shut it off. I can feel the tiredness but I doubt I'll be able to do anything about it until my son goes down for his nap.

There has been a lot going on this week. A lot to think about and distract me. Work is pushing hard and fast, my son's past Nanny has decided not to come back after her maternity leave (understandable), we got a new toy for watching t.v., the lawn needed mowing, the homework needed done, etc., etc.

Through it all though I've felt a sense of accomplishment. Partially due to the things I've down and decided based on the events above but mainly because of the fact that I'm still reading my Bible steadily and drawing closer to God through it all.

I'm working on a relationship with God and remembrance is a big key to that. Whenever we work on building trust in someone whether its a teacher or a parent or even just a friend we usually come to a situation where we have to stretch that trust. Our decision to not do so can be based on fact or fear. If its fact and there is reason to not trust them then it is good. If its out of fear then we've just lost a chance to grow closer to that person.

With God what we need remember is all things he does are for our benefit. They may not seem like that at the time but looking back we can usually see what he was doing if we look to him wanting a relationship rather than fearful to push forward.

But I said remembrance is a key. With your teacher/parent/friend that you are deciding whether to trust further the thing to do is to look back; to remember. Remember the times that you did trust them and they came through for you. Remember how you needed that shoulder to cry on and they were there for you. Remembering those things strengthens your ability to trust them again.

With God it is the same way. We can't grow closer to God if we don't trust him with our lives. So I remember the things he has done.

Deuteronomy 7:17-19 (NIV)
17 You may say to yourselves, “These nations are stronger than we are. How can we drive them out?” 18 But do not be afraid of them; remember well what the LORD your God did to Pharaoh and to all Egypt. 19 You saw with your own eyes the great trials, the signs and wonders, the mighty hand and outstretched arm, with which the LORD your God brought you out. The LORD your God will do the same to all the peoples you now fear.

Luke 22:18-20 (NIV)
18 For I tell you I will not drink again from the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.”
19 And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me.”
20 In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you.
What do I remember?

I remember how he came to me during camping many years ago and spoke to my need. I remember seeing the logic of a loving God who was not part of this universe but stood outside able to see and do all that he wills, all that we need. If I wasn't a Christian then (my memory isn't the best from that time - another topic) I was after that moment.

I remember another camp experience in which I was suffering pretty badly from diarrhea (TMI?). It was making my camp experience miserable. I couldn't participate in anything really. But I remember sitting quietly in a worship service (yes, a Christian camp) while everyone else was up and praising God and having a good time. I remember praying to God in that time and being filled with the knowledge that I needed to rebuke the sickness in me, stand up and praise God. I did just that. The pains went away, the other symptoms went away and I was free! I continued to praise God and thank God through the night.

I remember the vision that God gave me that I told to one other person. That vision was then confirmed when a visitor came to our church and told of a vision she had that not only matched my own but was reflected in the visions of several other world Christian leaders. That vision became the basis for the name of the Faith Christian Center youth group - Blue Flames For Christ.

I remember needing a better job than I had back after high school. I was called by a friend from church who saw an ad in the paper that they felt God was telling them to tell me about. They said to apply for the job and then come and have dinner with them and tell them all about it. I was hired for the job and it was mine for 5 years. It shaped a lot of the skills I now have and was a great experience. I would have never had that job if God had not spoken to my friend and encouraged me to apply.

Most recently I had a dream that not only scared me but was directly linked to my spiritual life. I won't go into the details of the dream now (I've put it on Google+ with limited access for now. I may post it here someday) but it changed me. I think back to that dream quite a bit when I feel myself getting unfocused.

There are so many more things God has done both big and small that I couldn't even begin to put them here. If you are in a tough spot take time today to remember all God has done for you. It might change your life.

In case you were interested

Yesterday I mentioned that I have begun reading the Bible again daily. I thought I should provide a simple help guide for anyone that might be interested in doing the same. You shouldn't just open up the Bible at the beginning and expect to understand it all. Choosing where you are at in life from my list below and reading accordingly might help.

Also, I'm not going to provide anything more than the scripture references. If you are serious about reading look them up! If you do not have a Bible there are several online Bibles to choose from. I recommend Bible Gateway. Enter the Book Chapter:Verse to look things up.

Many translations are available. I recommend New Internation Version (NIV) or New King James Version (NKJV) for beginners. The Amplified Bible (AMP) is also good for a more in depth study and, if you are more of the poetic type, the Message Bible is a good paraphrased version to look at.

Good luck and God bless!

1. Curious but not a Christian? I recommend you start reading the Bible with what is called the "Romans Road"
Romans 3:23
Romans 6:23
Romans 5:8
Romans 10:13
Romans 10:9-10
If you need something to tell you what you just read click here.

2. New Believer? I recommend reading the Gospel of John. Do not confuse with 1 John, 2 John or 3 John. Those are later in the New Testament. John is an account of the life of Jesus emphasising God's love and mercy to us.

3. Ready for more than that? Go to the Old Testament book of Proverbs. There are 31 chapters. Choose one chapter a day to read. It can become tedious at times but its lumped full of wisdom and a good way to get a habit of reading formed.

4. After that? I would seriously consider reading 1 Corinthians, Ephesians, 1 Timothy and James. They are good foundations for walking a Christian life.

The rest is up to you! Many like doing the "read the Bible in a year" thing. Others want to go in depth on more challenging sections. I'm not here to tell you how to read your Bible but only to encourage you to do so and provide a guideline on how to get started.

Let me know if this helps at all! :)

I'll get to it later

So my wife has started a whole new blog site and posted twice in the last week whereas I haven't posted but once in the last month. So I thought I should probably post again.

So what's going on? Well, recently I had to take a whole day to catch up on my homework because I fell behind, its taken me a month to post again on here and just today I was reminded that I owe at least two people wedding videos from a time so long ago I'm embarrassed to even say how long. Basically, I think I have a problem with procrastination.

I'm not always procrastinating. I do get some things done on time if not earlier. One of my classes I tend to try to get on and get done as quickly as possible as I know the assignments are usually complex. I don't want to have my stuff coming up late because I waited too long to work on it. He doesn't take late work. I also push to get my career work done on time, I'm always early to events (unless my wife/son slow me down) and and ...I can't think of anything else.

I think part of my problem is keeping a balance. Recently I started reading my Bible daily again. Again. In times past one of two things usually kept me from making this a daily occurrence. One, I would get so legalistic about reading the Bible, so rigid about it, that I would either burn out from it or I'd beat myself up badly if I failed to do so even one day.

The other thing that stopped me was the opposite problem. I would try to be liberal about reading the Bible to the point where one day would go by and I'd say, "No big deal. I'll read tomorrow." Then tomorrow would come with the same response. Then the next day would arrive. And another. And another. Until I felt no compulsion at all to care.

This time I'm doing better, I think. I've decided to try to keep a strong balance between the two. I lean toward legalistic because I know that if I don't make it a solid routine I will fall prey to procrastination. But I'm leaving myself wiggle room for the occasional life issue getting in the way. Doing this I've only missed reading three times in the last month. With God's help to keep me balanced I'm sure I can continue.

Now I need to apply this practice to other areas of my life. Putting off homework, or things you've promised to others is not cool. I think I need to pick a specific day a week to write on this blog. If I don't get to it that day, once in a while, that's cool but not writing at least once a week shouldn't be acceptable. At least, not if I'm truly committed to being a part of the blogging world.

Here are some scriptures on laziness/procrastination:
Proverbs 13:4 ESV - The soul of the sluggard craves and gets nothing, while the soul of the diligent is richly supplied.

Proverbs 27:1 ESV - Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring.

Luke 9:59-62 ESV - To another he said, "Follow me." But he said, "Lord, let me first go and bury my father." And Jesus said to him, "Leave the dead to bury their own dead. But as for you, go and proclaim the kingdom of God." Yet another said, "I will follow you, Lord, but let me first say farewell to those at my home." Jesus said to him, "No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God."
And here are some encouraging scripture to help us all battle slothfulness:
Matthew 6:33 ESV - But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.

Philippians 4:13 ESV - I can do all things through him who strengthens me.

Proverbs 12:25 ESV - Anxiety in a man's heart weighs him down, but a good word makes him glad.

1 Thessalonians 5:2 - For you yourselves are fully aware that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night.

Ecclesiastes 9:10 - Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might; for there is no work or device or knowledge or wisdom in the grave where you are going.
